62 Years: State of the Nation

Today is India's 62nd Independence Day. But the Nation's mood is not upbeat. There are various reasons to it. To me, the nation is weak, challenged and down-under. Half of country's agricultural land is facing an unprecedented drought. "Kisaan" - the farmers - are hopeless and in aghast despair. Probably for the first time in the last 25 years, I didn't hear the Prime Minister's speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi. I didn't feel like listening to a speech prepared by a moron bureaucrat which talks about the absurd and unrealistic achievements of my country. I am indeed a chauvinist from the core of my heart but the current state of the nation makes me feel very depressed, vulnerable and non-committed.

This monsoon poses a challenge of sorts to us. We are not only facing a drought but also shall be ready for farmers to succumb to untimely deaths. Inflation is low but the prices of essential commodities are sky high. Prices of pulses, vegetables, edible oil, sugar, and other essential daily needs are fast becoming unaffordable. Capitalists are sucking the blood of workers to produce more with least amount of facilities. The exploitation of labour is on an all-time high. This is the state of my nation. Then why should I be listening to those artificially crafted speeches of these insane and irresponsible leaders?

The times are not far when there will be mayhem on the streets. People will be violent and aggression will be on top of their minds. There will be chaos and anarchy. And this system will still boast of its credentials for Indo-US nuclear deal, privatisation, disinvestment and grooming the capitalists society.

This is what makes me sad on this otherwise very sacred day, which I wait for every year. Not even one responsible leader of this country is talking about the plight of my farmer brethren and the labourers in the dry fields. They are all just bothered about filling in their coffers and making riches. No one is there to address the poor man's anxiety about his/her future.

That's where I am and that's where we all are on the 62nd Independence day. Think about it.
